Is asking for S1000D enough?
More and more now we are seeing the increase in requests for S1000D as a technical publications deliverable, this has been a trend for some time, especially on larger platforms. But, is asking for S1000D enough?
Most contracts to the supply chain will now at least call for a technical publications requirement and many will now specifically ask for the S1000D specification to be ‘used’.
But is asking for S1000D enough?
Well the answer in short is, of course, a big fat NO. Many contracts simply state throw away lines, like “Must comply with S1000D”, “Technical Publications to meet the S1000D standard must be delivered” or even worse, “IETM to meet S1000D standard” – which makes me break into a sweat. The statements and ‘requirements’ are written by those that simply have no idea what they have just asked for and the ramifications for the supply chain, but ultimately the impact on the wider project!
The contracts landscape is littered with examples of S1000D being called for and yet the deliverable to the client is a standard Adobe PDF file and no requirement to deliver ANY source material.
It’s like telling a chef which pans he needs to use, but we are only interested in eating the steak!
Here is the problem, contracts, the legally binding agreements we deliver to, often state very high level and often confusing requirements, especially around the need for support information, which technical publications forms a fundamental part. Yet we are held to our contract, the contract states we deliver S1000D then we deliver S1000D – but what can contracts and those who write them do to help the information supply chain?
Successful contracting for S1000D
If your project really needs and desires S1000D SOURCE data, then of course we would contract for this, but not in a nebulous fashion, there are things that your information supply chain needs to know to support you, but most importantantly there are things YOU need to know before even considering contracting for S1000D!
